WELCOME TO THE CASBAH!

"His music is as hybrid as his stage persona. Middle Eastern chants, country western, folk music and avant garde mannerisms are tied together with vocals that owe as much to the crooning powers of Dean Martin as to the strident edge of the Clash."
- Colin Gardner, Santa Monica News/Outlook

This timely re-issue features the blended sounds of traditional Middle Eastern music with West Coast Surf rock.

Growing up in Santa Monica, California, The Dark Bob (a second generation beach boy who is half Lebanese) immediately recognized the “Arabesque” notes and guitar runs in Dick Dale’s important early Surf rock (Surf guitar king Dick Dale, another American of Lebanese descent, openly credits the influence of Middle Eastern music in his Surf guitar style).

During this decade, 1989 – 1999, The Dark Bob and his 9 piece “middle eastern, country western, surf, punk, art rock” orchestra played nightclubs all over Los Angeles to controversy and critical acclaim.

"I was working with musicians and belly dancers who usually play at churches, mosques or restaurants” says The Dark Bob.  “I’d take them out to do shows at some heavy metal rock club or punk club and we’d take the place by storm – c’mon, bellydancers in spandex and leather jackets!”

Also included on this cd are hilarious monologs. The Dark Bob delivered these monologues “to keep from getting killed” he says.  These outrageous talks are “produced” in a recording studio and then lip-synched to the audience.  It’s very funny stuff that will crack you up!

Grab a hookah, slip on some pointy shoes and get ready to move joints you didn’t know you had…WELCOME TO THE CASBAH!
